This is our most comprehensive mountaineering course built specifically to support your leadership skills in the mountains. With the Mountaineering: Intermediate course (or equivalent experience) under your belt, we will have more time to dive into decision making regarding equipment, preparation, navigation, and strategy.

On this course, you will start to plan and execute your own mountaineering experience, and be placed in a leadership role to the extent in which you are comfortable. You can expect to cook a meal, navigate to the base camp, and navigate on glaciated terrain. The course will take place on Mt. Baker or Mt. Shuksan and does include a summit attempt.

Another focus of the curriculum is crevasse rescue. As our most comprehensive training, we will spend time in real terrain practicing both 2, 3, and group crevasse rescue. We will put you in scenarios that test your reaction and stress level; and we will give you the confidence needed to venture into crevassed terrain as a competent rope team member.

Walk away with a comprehensive understanding of crevasse rescue and applicable experience climbing and traveling in glaciated terrain.

This is a 4-day course held on Mt. Baker or Mt. Shuksan.  It includes a mandatory pre-trip meeting held at the Kaf Office in Seattle the evening before the course start date.

All participants will be responsible for getting themselves to the pre-trip meeting. Kaf does not provide transportation for the outing, however we recognize that transportation can be challenging. Once registered, Kaf will provide information regarding meeting times, locations and any required parking permits. If interested in carpooling, we will orchestrate a meeting place between participants.

Out-of-Town Participants:
We recommend that anyone flying in to Seattle to arrive as early as possible on the day before the trip. We also recommend you do not book a return flight until late (red-eye) on the last day of the trip, or the following morning.

Day O (Pre-Trip Meeting)
6:30pm-9pm Pre-trip meeting at our office. You will bring all personal gear and equipment to this meeting. We will go over the route and itinerary as well as go over personal and group gear to ensure everyone has what they need.

Day 1
Meet at around 7am to carpool and transport to the trail head.  Hike approximately 3-5 miles/4,000’ elevation gain and set up a base camp.

Day 2
Move camp onto the glacier and practice snow skills/glacier travel skills. We will also practice crevasse rescue during the day.

Day 3
Student led summit attempt.  Leave camp early in the morning (~2am) to head for the summit.  Depending on the route/conditions/weather and a myriad of other factors this can take anywhere from 4-12 hours. We will descend a different route to practice navigation through more glaciated terrain. We will also have more time for advanced crevasse rescue.

Day 4
Wake up, break down camp, return any rental gear and group gear to Kaf and head home!  This day can also serve as a possible skills practice day on the mountain.

Plan to be home by 8pm on Day 4.

Course will take place at either:
Mount Baker
Mount Rainier

8 – 11 July
19 – 22 August
