Washington Ski/Splitboard Mentorship – After your AIARE 1 refresher
Traveling in the backcountry is a lifelong pursuit. While access to the wilderness can be incredibly liberating, a myriad of factors can inhibit personal confidence and leadership. From the hazards and complexities of avalanches to reading terrain, to finding good snow and locations, plus understanding weather and its effect on snow conditions; one can be left feeling incredibly overwhelmed. Even after learning how to ski inbounds and taking an avalanche and rescue course, the learning curve to gain confidence is slow. Often our students and clients feel timid to make decisions even after a few years in the backcountry.
The Backcountry ski/splitboard mentorship program is designed to support you as a backcountry traveler while working directly with a trained professional ski and avalanche educator. Spend 3 months this winter (December – March) traveling into the backcountry. You’ll practice skills like decision-making, conditions and safety evaluation, and skiing/riding technique, all with a professional guiding you along the way. Learn how to assess new areas and pick the best locations in any given condition. You might even find secret areas to ski/snowboard untracked powder! Feel confident knowing you have a professional by your side, and take away that newfound confidence when the program is over. As a bonus, you’ll gain a community of new ski partners along the way! It’s a win, win, win!
Program Benefits
- Great for skiers/splitboarders who ski in bounds and are ready to get further into the backcountry.
- Designed to help participants take an avalanche forecast and carefully plan and execute a backcountry tour
- Learn new areas to ski/ride
- Great for winter enthusiasts interested in meeting like-minded people who share similar passions all while under the supervision of a trained professional
Our mentorship program offers 24 days of training in the winter months (December – March). You will self-select up to 12 dates to work with an AMGA-trained ski guide + AIARE Course Leader or Instructor in a small group (up to 6 people). Mentorship includes topics like; Reading forecasts, route planning, mindset, avalanche checklists, and practical applications of backcountry travel.
This is a leadership course, and a professional guide will not only teach you but also let you make decisions in real-time while being available to you for questions and feedback.
The group enrollment period is limited, and capped at 24 people. After December 15th, when the enrollment period has closed, the group participants will then be given access to sign up for individual mentorship days. Because individual days are limited to 6 participants, each mentee will have ample opportunity to lead while in the backcountry.
