Intro to Snow Camping Excursion

Once you’ve completed the Intro to Snow Camping Class Indoors, it’s time for part two – Intro to Snow Camping Excursion!

Now it’s time to get hands-on experience preparing, traveling, navigating, assessing avalanche terrain, using your gear, camping, cooking, designing snow shelters and exploring the deep winter mountains!

Join us for a 3-day course that’s designed to solidify the skills taught during the Intro to Snow Camping Class. (Completing the Into to Snow Camping Class is required unless pre-approved by the instructor of the excursion.)

Take a look at what you will be able to demonstrate upon completion of this trip:

1. Recognize his/her strengths and limitations as winter camper.

2. Understand the potential risks and hazards inherent to snow camping in the North Cascades; and understand how to prepare for and reduce the likelihood of an emergency situation.

3. Demonstrate an understanding of winter navigation techniques.

4. Demonstrate a general understanding of avalanche hazards.

5. Plan, organize, equip, and safely implement a multi-day winter camping trip.

6. Explain the mechanisms of heat loss and techniques for keeping warm and dry in winter conditions.

7. Explain the signs and symptoms of hypothermia and frostbite and techniques for preventing and/or treating each.

8. Demonstrate proficiency in environmentally sound winter camping and travel techniques.

9. Understand the procedures for constructing snow caves, igloos, and other snow shelters.


The Dates: February 3rd – 5th, 2012
