Rock Climbing: Beginner is the outdoor climbing course that will give you the skills and confidence to head into the gym and become a climber.

The outcomes of this course are 1. to pass a top-rope belay assessment at your local gym, and 2. be a valuable addition to any outdoor climbing party.

AGES 18+ for adult courses or 16+ with consent from a guardian and Kaf approval.
12-18 for youth courses.
PREREQUISITES This is a beginner level course. Any previous climbing knowledge will enhance your experience, but no prior experience is necessary.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN Proper fitting of a harness
How to tie-in with a figure eight follow through
Top-rope belay technique with a belay device and/or an assisted breaking device
Catch a top-rope fall
Lower climber safely
Clear and safe communication
Basic/recreational climbing movement and techniques/comfortability in vertical terrain
Parts of a climbing shoe and pros and cons of shoe design
Introduction to strength rating on climbing gear
Introduction of the concept of soft goods versus hard goods
Overhand knot series: knot, bite, follow-through, bend, and flat
Figure eight knot series: knot, bite, follow-through, and bend
Clove hitch

EQUIPMENT Kaf will provide all necessary climbing equipment for the day. You are responsible for clothes that will be comfortable while climbing indoors for 2.5 hours.

TRANSPORTATION & TIMES Transportation and times will be coordinated by email when the pre-trip announcement is sent to all registrants. The course is scheduled to run from 6:30-9:00pm.

Each introductory course will be held indoors at West Seattle Health Club.

The course meets at 6:30pm and your instructor will educate for the first 1.25 hours practicing the skills necessary for managing risk while climbing.

For the remainder of the time, you will be climbing, belaying, and practicing the skills.

The course will finish at 9pm.

Custom courses can be created for any 2.5 hour block with a minimum of 3 participants.
