This course is your gateway into the wonderful world of backpacking. Join a small group of other outdoor recreational enthusiasts for a fun, informative and rewarding 2 day backpacking course led by a Kaf Adventures professional backpacking guide. During this introductory course, you will get hands on experience preparing, travelling, navigating, using your gear, camping, cooking, and exploring. The valuable information that you’ll walk away with will become a strong foundation of backpacking skills that you’ll be confident to build upon throughout your future wilderness experiences. Backpacking through the North Cascades and Olympic National Park is an amazing opportunity that will leave your feeling empowered and refreshed.

AGES 18+ for adult courses or 16+ with consent from a guardian and Kaf approval.
12-18 for youth courses.
PREREQUISITES No backpacking experience required. Some hiking experience is helpful.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN Using USFS and other planimetric and topographic maps, identify potential areas, trails and facilities for hiking and backpacking.
Accurately interpret a route designated by the instructor on a topographic map; and evaluate the route in terms of travel difficulty, transit time, hazards, escape routes and suitability for foot travel.
Explain the equipment needs of both individuals and groups on day, overnight, and extended trips. Complete list of clothing and equipment needed given a trip description.
Be able to pick a route that meets your experience level and understand the significance of environmental factors of that route.
Demonstrate a working knowledge of land management agencies and permits required for use.
Demonstrate the ability to construct an accurate profile of terrain from a topographic map, including calculation of distance, direction, and elevation gain or loss.
Demonstrate an understanding of the fitness requirements need for backpacking and of conditioning methods for this activity.
Understand responsible backcountry camping techniques and Leave No Trace ethics.
Explain the food preparation, planning and cooking process of an overnight backpacking trip.

This is a 1 night, 2 day backpacking course. It includes a mandatory pre-trip meeting held at the Kaf Office in Seattle the evening before the course start date.

All participants will be responsible for getting themselves to the pre-trip meeting. Kaf does not provide transportation for the outing, however we recognize that transportation can be challenging. Once registered, Kaf will provide information regarding meeting times, locations and any required parking permits. If interested in carpooling, we will orchestrate a meeting place between participants.

Out-of-Town Participants:
We recommend that anyone flying in to Seattle to arrive as early as possible on the day before the trip. We also recommend you do not book a return flight until late (red-eye) on the last day of the trip, or the following morning.

Day 0 (Pre-Trip Meeting)
6:30pm-9pm Pre-trip meeting at our office. You will bring all personal gear and equipment to this meeting. We will discuss route and itinerary, overall safety management, and go through all personal and group gear to ensure everyone has what they need.

Day 1
Meet around 7am and drive to predetermined course location. Arrive at trail-head around 11am, and let the fun, learning, and adventure begin. Daily mileage and elevation gain will vary, average is 4-6 miles/day and 2,000′ of elevation gain. Topics covered throughout the day include trip planning, navigation, local flora and fauna, water purification, river crossings, and more. You will arrive at camp in the early afternoon and learn the skills and practices of excellent campcraft. Enjoy some personal time to explore and unwind, followed by a group dinner where you will begin your back country cooking education and experience the joy of a sharing a warm meal after a long day on the trail.

Day 2
Wake up for the last day in the backcountry. Cook breakfast, take down camp, and hit the trail where you will continue learning and practicing skills.  Daily mileage and elevation gain will vary, average is 4-6 miles/day and 2,000′ of elevation gain.  We will arrive back at the cars around 3pm and return to Seattle around 7pm.
